AIDS agencies to link services, move to one site

by Gloria Smith

Columbus-One year ago the Columbus AIDS Task Force and Metropolitan Residential Services began actively exploring the possibility of integrating services at one location.

Current political and fundraising trends suggest that the financial climate for AIDS service organizations may grow harsher. At CATF and MRS, an agency that provides low-cost housing to people with HIV or AIDS, we hope to be ready to weather any storms that come our way. The integrated services model represents our effort to continue to be proactive in doing business smarter and cheaper with better access for clients.

We hope that enabling clients to handle a number of needs at once will make lives that are already complicated by HIV and AIDS a bit simpler. For instance, a housing interview could be taken care of at the same time that a bus pass or food voucher is picked up.

"It makes sense that the client would have access to more services at one location," said MRS director Cheryl Carter.

A CATF client who lives in MRS housing commented that having more services

under one roof would make things more convenient for him. "I think it's an excellent idea," he said.

CATF and MRS will both be moving this fall to 751 Northwest Blvd. The site, at the corner of Northwest Blvd. and Goodale St. in Grandview Hts., was selected based on focus group input. Clients wanted a location in an area of the city where they would not be identified going

in the door. We looked at ten possible locations, and chose this one because the area is primarily industrial and the building is handicapped-accessible and on a bus line.

When we began to consider service integration, CATF and MRS hired a professional consultant, Fred Bartenstein and Associates. Bartenstein has been working with our boards of trustees and facilitating focus groups of CATF staff, clients and volunteers; MRS staff and clients; gay community leaders; and funders. Focus group members unanimously said that services integration would be more cost-effective and efficient. Members agreed that

a "one stop shopping" model would create easier access and less confusion for the client; and would decrease administrative costs.

What will integrated services mean for our agencies? CATF and MRS will retain their respective organizational identities but will share a fiscal officer, receptionists, volunteer recruitment and training, and meeting space. We are designing the space in the hope that if other organizations want to participate, it will be available to them as well.
